These are some of the projects that I was required to do for my study on this culture!
MY SCRAPBOOK
MY POSTCARDS
Where I am From
I am from what is now Ohio
I am from commencing the day with hard work
I am from shoveling the dirt with pots and bowls
From building mounds in many places around
From large constructions of earth and stone
I am from the sound of wet dirt being smacked together
From much toil to gather soil
From the search in the water for the food it holds
From finding treasure and gold!
I am from worshipping the Sun gods
From trading with my neighbors
From the Cahokia mounds to the Mississippi river
I am from the Hopewell Culture to the Adena Culture
I am from seeing the tall mounds rise above everything else
From seeing our loved ones being buried inside them
From late night entertainment around the sacred mounds
I am from the Mound Builders Civilization
I am from what is now Ohio
Reflection Page
Overview of The Culture:
My culture was the Mississippian Mound Builders. They strived through the years 1000 AD - 1700 AD. They were killed off by disease and conflict. The Mound Builders built mounds. Mounds were used for a large variety of things. Some mounds were used as graves, ceremonial rituals and/or religious beliefs. The only entertainment was hunting, fishing and sometimes making mud pies! The Mississippians had a great deal of agriculture. There were no records of any known people but of course there were the levels of different classes. Such as the higher power or known as the Monk, and then there were the peasants. They made various styles of mounds varying from height and size. Some mounds are roundly shaped while some are rectangular shaped.
Summary and Reflection on the Illustrations:
My choices were very limited in the information I could provide. There wasn't any records on important people, entertainment, fashion and music. Their main attraction was from their Mounds. We also know that they fished, farmed and made much pottery. I had five different categories for my scrapbook; People, Art, Craftsmanship, Mound Shapes and Postcards. On the People page I showed a few pictures on how we believe the Mound Builders looked like. The Craftsmanship page referred to all the different types of materials used to make poetry such as brass, copper and iron.
Synthesis of What You Learned :
I learned many things from researching this culture, I learned that a little thing like building mounds can become an important part of history. I think that the idea that surprised me the most was the fact that the Mississippians could make such a simple hill into a magnificent meaning. The culture seemed to have a very decent lifestyle. I believe I would have loved to experience this culture because it seems like they had a very exquisite perspective on life. Not only did they build mounds they created a meaningful structure.
